for inviting me to guest host it week while he's out on tour. it's been almost a month since the presidential election and about half the country remains elated, vindicated triumphant. they voted for president obama and are walking on cloud nine. the other half, well, not so much. they are confused, despondent, even sleepless, they wonder if the whole nation has gone quite mad and want to return it common sense not another four years on fantasy island. now, we're taught as kids to be good sportsmen, not to gloat after winning, to give the other side a high five and say good game. have we seen much of that from the winners since november 6th? nope. but no matter, being a good sport means not just being a gracious winner, it means being a good-spirited loser, even when it's hard to feel that way. half an election, the losing party must ask, what went wrong, why didn't people come out to vote. but enough self-flangelation, it's time to get up and dust ourselves off and walk to midfield, give them the high five they deserve and get to work. what is the alternative? anger? sadness? depression? tha

for not 52 weeks but one week alone. the tax increases that president obama is now trying to push through will really do almost nothing to reduce our national deficit and nothing to reduce our national debt. the white house and democrats in the senate are focused only on tax hikes while they continue ignoring the real drivers of our debt, which is the out-of-control entitlement programs -- social security, medicare, and medicaid. until we find a way to do meaningful entitlement reform, no amount of tax revenue will be able to match the increase in violate spending. -- in entitlement spending. the president continues in his campaign mode going around the country to try to sell his tax hikes. the president and the democrats in congress are willing to go over the fiscal cliff in order to get those tax hikes. rather than negotiate in good faith, they're willing to try to spend their time trying to convince the american people that it's just someone else's fault. going over the fiscal cliff will mean another recession, and this one is squarely on the shoulders of president obama. it will mean

so we don't miss anything. for what it's worth, president obama and house speaker boehner are talking. they had a nice telephone conversation. that's terrific. the first time in a week but apparently that's the headline. that's the editorial body. not much came out of it that we know of. sources say no real breakthrough. no formal negotiations. sessions are not scheduled. no back channel discussions taking place that anybody knows about at this time and as we wait for the white house briefing to begin, let's bring in wolf blitzer on this topic. there are a couple of polls that are very telling about how americans feel about congress and the president are behaving when it comes to the fiscal cliff. let me read some of these numbers for you. should obama compromise to get things done. 72% say yes. 22% say no. should the gop compromise to get things done. and take a look. 72% say yes. my question for you, wolf, i'm not sure you'll have the answer but perhaps you'll have guidance. for those democrats who say the president has a mandate because voters voted him into office while he campaig

on this issue of taxes. the white house saying president obama is saying rates should go up on those making $250,000 or more. these are two starting proposals. the white house has put their proposal out last week. it really drew a hard line, calls for $1.6 trillion in new tax revenue, most of that coming from increasing taxes on wealthier americans, but this republican plan very different, does not call for increasing taxes on wealthier americans. president also wants to end congressional oversight of the debt limit. there's no such offer in the republican plan. in fact, some aides have told me that that is a pipe dream. so these two sides still very far apart. now, tonight, martin, the white house will be inviting members of congress here for the holiday party. house speaker john boehner will be here as well. there have been a lot of questions about whether these two will run into each other, whether they will talk about the fiscal cliff. no one is signaling what they might discuss, but house speaker john boehner when asked about tonight's event said that he thinks he might run into the preside

. i will tell you the white house after not being very happy with the pace of negotiations the week before last sent treasury secretary tim geithner up to the hill to outline this proposal. there's a lot we already knew about that president obama had already taken a public position on. the white house is now saying to republicans as well, we want you to put the meat on the bones when it comes to the entitlement reform portion of this deficit reduction plan. that's politically very tricky, as you know, because a lot of times dealing with entitlements will be construed as cuts to medicare and that's often not very popular. as you can imagine that deal that you just outlined, not received very well by republicans on the hill. >> i think we're going over the cliff. it's pretty clear to me they've made a political calculation. this offer doesn't remotely deal with entitlement reform in a way to save medicare and medicaid, and social security from imminent bankruptcy. the president's plan when it comes to entitlement reform is just quite frankly a joke so i don't think they're serious abo

practical republican left in washington was suddenly willing to say out loud what we have known for weeks: the only remaining option is for the house to pass the senate bill. dozens of house republicans signed onto a letter urging speaker boehner to take the last hexit before the cliff. neither president obama nor democrats in congress have ever been ambiguous about our proposal to provide economic security for 98% of american families and 97% of small businesses while asking the wealthiest 2% to contribute just a little more to stop this runaway debt. and now that even a dyed in the wool conservative like senator coburn of oklahoma has endorsed the democratic approach, here's what he said, "i know we have to raise revenue. i would rather see the rates go up," he said. he's been heavily involved in everything that's happened in the last several years in washington dealing with debt. when he joins in, that's really significant. it is apparent how this will end. the only question is, when will it end? it's how long will speaker boehner make middle-class families wait for relief and how long

. and it is unfortunate that the white house spent three weeks doing basically nothing. >> now, the republican counterproposal that we just heard about still includes those bush era tax cuts staying in place for everybody, which president obama has called a nonstarter. so what if we raised taxes a little bit? still be much lower than what americans paid just a generation ago. in 1980, the wealthiest americans paid a marginal tax rate of 70% of their income to uncle sam. now, tax reform under president reagan reduced that rate to 50% and in 1981, and closer to current levels in 1986. today, president obama wants to let the bush era tax cuts expire for wealthy americans only, taking up their marginal federal tax rate from 36% to 39.6%. we're talking about a 3.6 percentage point uptick for households making more than $250,000 a year, only on every dollar they make above the $250,000 amount. starts 2 s at $251,000. it is on the money you make on the margin. now, while i totally agree every penny counts when it comes to your money, when you compare that to the taxes most americans paid out in past
